The day was a blur, the morning was spent emptying out our bags and then refilling them with summer wear again. Then it was off to a family lunch with Nanny and Grandad Bakewell to celebrate Sophia’s birthday.
We flew Norwegian air, and feel we must give them a mention as they turned out to be a really good budget airline, they even have free wifi at cruising altitude, along with friendly staff and comfortable leather seats, time to buck up Easy Jet and Ryannair!
Once landing at Split we had to get straight onto a bus for a 40 minute drive to the harbour, we just about made the ferry leaving for Vis which took almost 2.5 hours. We were suitably knackered by the time we got to the port of Vis and were so thankful that Ratko, the owner of the house we were staying at was there to greet us.
Of course, there was more time for another birthday celebration for Sophia too!
Once reaching the island we had to jump off the boat and board another much smaller boat, we were soon to find out why! The entrance to the cave is tiny, so tiny that it seemed impossible that we were going in at all. Then, out of nowhere, the bow of a boat the same as ours slowly emerged from the cave, the passengers all looked at each other wide eyed, on that queue our skipper ordered everybody onto the floor of the boat with heads down, we were going in! He very slowly putted towards the cave entrance, slipped us under the cave roof and shut the engine.
Once inside the cave we could sit normally again and take in the surroundings. It’s surreal, an underwater tunnel carved through the limestone lets the sunlight in and illuminates the perfectly clear water the most amazing blue colour, much to Samuel’s joy, ‘it’s bluen, it’s bluen, bluen is my favourite colour!’
The trek up was pretty easy, compared to other escapades, and winds up through some rugged landscaped gardens, the view from the top was stunning, you could see the whole town, the port and surrounding islands, worth the climb!
Tummies full we hit the rocks for some swimming, climbing and sunbathing before heading back to vis later in the day.
