New York and Virginia, USA

Our last post left us in Canada before we headed off again back to the US of A baby.

I think that we can say in total honesty that we queued longer at check in and getting through US customs pre clearance in Toronto than it actually took to fly to New York City. US customs is an experience we will not be sad to leave behind us, that is for sure!

Whilst in New York we had mixed accommodation plans of staying with friends James and Mezh in Brooklyn over the 4th of July weekend and a homeswap across the Hudson river looking back at the amazing Manhattan skyline. We were also lucky enough to catch up with many friends who had moved here from Singapore!

Brooklyn was the first stop and we were treated to a great weekend with hosts James and Mezh. It was awesome to be shown around by some ‘locals’ and watch the 4th July fireworks from a rooftop and enjoy some of Mezh’s amazing bbq’d Kebabs!

It was also with Mezh that we felt the long arm of the law in New York! She had kindly taken us to the Children’s Museum in Brooklyn and then to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a walk, play and picnic. This was where the trouble started brewing.

Whilst enjoying our picnic on a perfect summers day upon a beautifully manicured lawn a man in uniform suddenly appeared….

‘Folks, you are not allowed to picnic in the park, it is in fact against the park's regulations for you to lay down a blanket.’

Shocked by such retarded laws and the unsolicited approach we just kind of stared blankly at him before uttering the words…

‘Er, ok.’

We folded the blanket up, sat ourselves back down and finished our food whilst checking over our shoulders. What utter madness, how in the ‘land of the free’ is it against the law to unfurl a blanket and eat a sandwich or two in a park that you have paid an entrance fee too!

The trouble did not stop there however. As we were walking the grounds we were studying some Venus Fly Traps in a pond. Again, another officer came out of nowhere and reprimanded us for having the kids too close to the water! All very strange indeed.

That aside we had a great day discovering Brooklyn with Mezh and still had plenty of fun!

Truckee CA and Seattle WA, USA.

Our time in San Francisco had come to an end and we can safely say we pretty much nailed our stay there. Although we were sad to leave Rich and Dev, we had no regrets of missing any sights or adventures in the city.

Our drive North West to Truckee near Lake Tahoe was supposed to be 3.5- 4 hours, however, we had no idea that we were travelling over Memorial Day weekend and were stuck in traffic for pretty much most of the journey. It took us almost 6.5 hours in the end, with only one brief stop. The kids were great, especially poor Sophia who threw up most of the journey with what we thought was acute travel sickness (the roads were very straight) but in retrospect was actually a niggly 24 hour sickness bug, which of course worked it’s way around us all over the next few days.

Thankfully upon our arrival we found that our homeswap property was amazing, a huge log cabin in the woods. It had such a homely feel and we were so glad of the 'one touch to light' big fire as soon as we arrived as temperatures had plummeted and we were all freezing!

Venturing out the next day we headed to The Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics where there was a small festival taking place for the start of summer. We were lucky enough to find a stubborn patch of ice and snow for the kids to have a play on!

Riding high on the wave of Dan's tweeting success in San Francisco he decided to send a Tweet to local Truckee resident Chris Sacca, a billionaire venture capitalist and probably the biggest private investor in Twitter.

Another success for direct contact on Twitter, Chris even visited our blog and commended our family adventure!

San Francisco, USA.

We arrived in San Francisco after a 12 hour long flight and having travelled back in time. We had left Auckland on Thursday 7th May at 7pm and arrived in SF Thursday 7th May at lunch time. Take that Marty McFly!

Pretty exhausted from the flight, we were gutted to see the mega queue for customs as we stepped off the airbridge. It took us 1.5 hours to even get our passports stamped. By the time we had got our bags, found a ride share bus, got stuck in traffic on the freeway, got into town and found the apartment it had been just over 4 hours of madness since alighting the plane.

Friends Rich and Dev had kindly offered to host us and it was great to see them again after not seeing them since they left Singapore a few years prior. Our timing worked out perfectly as they were off to Spain for 10 days, so in their absence we had the run of the apartment and the added fun of looking after their dog Bertie who is a great little character.

If the kids thought that their hiking days were over since leaving New Zealand, they soon realised otherwise. The hills in this city are extreme to say the least, but pretty much everywhere is walking distance, so walk we did! We often wonder how they will react to walking in later life; will they be avid hikers or hold a massive grudge? Only time will tell!

There is so much to do in San Fran that you are almost overwhelmed with choice of sights to visit, obviously we had to ride the cable cars, visit Alcatraz and get on the Golden Gate bridge!
